Police reports made against teen for disparaging remarks about Mr Lee Kuan Yew
SINGAPORE — The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has confirmed that reports have been filed against Amos Yee, a 17-year-old teen, for disparaging remarks made in a YouTube video about former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and of Christianity.
The eight-minute video, titled “Lee Kuan Yew is finally dead!”, was posted yesterday (March 27) and now has over 250,000 views. The 17-year-old also challenged Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to sue him.
Yee’s remarks have drawn flak online.
YouTube user Alexander Cai Wu Tian commented on the video: “Though I agree that LKY is controversial, what he did for Singapore made me very proud. To release a video of such bad taste when our country is in mourning really reflects on your upbringing.”
When contacted, a police spokesman said they are looking into the matter.
This is not the first time Yee has been criticised for remarks made on YouTube. In 2012, Yee, who had a minor role in local filmmaker Jack Neo’s movie We Not Naughty, made fun of Chinese New Year.
In the 2012 video, Yee also mocked the origins of the Chinese zodiac. His mother then had told The New Paper that Yee’s video was meant as a joke.
